Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time
Hungria — 2020
A bridge that serves as a symbol of the union of two lovers: Hungarian director Lili Horvát uses this cliché, and in Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time, which won the Golden Spike at the 66th SEMINCI - Valladolid International Film Week, she wonders what love is made of. After living in the United States for 20 years, neurosurgeon Márta Vizy returns to her hometown Budapest, to meet Janos, a doctor she met at a conference. Not only does the man fail to turn up at the Freedom Bridge in the Hungarian capital, but when Márta finally meets him, he claims to have never seen her. Is this a story dreamed up in the neurosurgeon´s mind? Is she lying? Holvát’s labyrinthine narrative, in which the images accentuate the tension between the material world and the protagonist’s inner world, reflects on reality and fiction in the construction of love. In this sense, the film is related to such pinnacle works as The Story of Adèle H. (1975), by Truffaut; La Jetée (1962), by Chris Marker; and, above all, to Hitchcock´s Vertigo (1958).
